Practice Philosophy

Excellence in patient care is at the core of Coastal Carolina Orthopaedic Surgeons (CCOS).  Everything that we do is focused on providing patient care as quickly as possible in a safe, clean, and friendly environment.  We offer excellence in patient care right in Jacksonville so that you can get back to your friends, your family, and your life. For our younger patients we designed a special pediatric exam room with toys and furniture to fit them. Colorful pictures and books make kids feel more comfortable. This also makes the appointments more enjoyable for the rest of the family.
We also spend a great deal of time educating our patients on their condition and treatment options available so that they are truly informed patients. Innovation in treatment is also a core mission of CCOS and as new techniques and treatments become available we incorporate them into patient care if they are scientifically sound. The Physicians of CCOS have acted as consultants in the development of new implants and have been among the first surgeons in the country to use the newest implants and techniques available so that you are receiving the most advanced care possible.  Change for change sake or advocating unproven new technology, as a marketing ploy, to attract patients is contrary to our core beliefs.
We now routinely perform most Orthopaedic procedures using minimally invasive techniques which require shorter hospital stays, less recovery time and easier rehabilitation. Minimally invasive surgeries often allow smaller incisions which leads to shorter operative times, and less blood loss.  Although, smaller scars are part of minimally invasive techniques the biggest benefit is increased patient satisfaction; especially in hip and knee procedures.  Arthroscopy of joints such as the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hip, knee, and ankle also make for a better patient experience. In the end we strive to offer our patients a stellar provider-patient relationship that is cutting edge and personal. We hope you agree.

Practice History

Coastal Carolina Orthopaedic Surgeons (CCOS, PA) is a North Carolina professional Association founded in 2003 by Dr. McClurg. The practice is located at 237 White Street directly adjacent to the hospital in Jacksonville North Carolina. The practice is in an elegant building and includes 5,500 Sq Feet for the Orthopaedic Practice and 5,000Sq feet for the Physical therapy and Occupational therapy practice run by OMH. Although the building was relatively new in 2003 it was extensively remodeled to convert it from its former use by Dr. Henry Haye as an Ob/GYN office. As many Jacksonville residents know Dr. Haye is a local legend and one of the best Doctors to have practiced in Jacksonville. The building has an overhead canopy in the front to protect injured or elderly patients as they leave their vehicles. Handicap parking is available at the side doors and wheelchairs are available to transport injured patients from their vehicles. Automatic doors allow for easy patient access. The waiting room is spacious and has ample seating and desk space to work. A TV and current magazines are available to pass what should be a short time until your scheduled appointment.
The practice now includes three Physician Assistants (PA) and offers the latest in Orthopaedic care.  The Orthopaedic PA’s are given intensive additional training by Dr. McClurg before they are allowed to see patients and perform injections and the training period can last as long as a year beyond there already extensive training as Physician Assistants.  The practice has expanded in scope and now offers nerve and muscle testing (EMG/NCS), which are performed by Mr. Steve Freeman, PT, ESC.  On site digital x-ray (the first in Onslow County). Onsite Physical therapy, and durable medical goods (boots, splints, braces) round out our musculoskeletal services.
The Practice is run by Christie McClurg, RN and has 12 full time employees dedicated to patient care and excellence in Orthopaedic practice.  Christie is the founding president of the Jacksonville practice managers association and continues to be a member of the group.  She is also an east coast advisory board member for Medical Mutual Insurance Company of North Carolina.
The practice values the privacy of its’ patients and is fully HIPAA compliant which means that your health record is safe and secure.  The practice is also in the process of converting to a full electronic medical record that will make records even more secure while using computers and technology to make access to your health information easier.
For the past 6 years the Physicians and Physician’s assistants at CCOS have been the only ones taking Emergency Room call at Onslow Memorial Hospital.
